In the early days of Kona’s coffee era, donkeys were used to transport loads of coffee beans down the steep volcanic slopes. Their loud brays could be heard reverberating off the mountainside, and the locals at the time nicknamed these mules the “bad-ass ones”- so the legend goes. Today, Bad Ass Coffee pays homage to these hardworking donkeys, not only in name but in their meticulous, tenacious nature in which they source, roast, and serve their coffee. From hand-selecting and roasting the beans right down to perfecting the espresso pour, it’s safe to say the folks at Bad Ass are stubborn about their coffee.
Locations
On Maui, Bad Ass has two locations on the west side of the island- one in Lahaina on Front Street, and another in Honokowai, across from Honokowai Beach Park. For coffee lovers, stepping into one of Bad Ass’ locations is like a kid stepping into a candy store. Scads of bagged coffee (including over 27 single-origin brews, eight of which are 100% Hawaiian beans from both Maui and Kona, as well as Kauai and Kaʻu on the Big Island) grace the shelves, as well as Bad Ass coffee merchandise, and an abundance of Hawaii inspired products.
